Sheikh Mohammed Metwally Al Shaarawi

Sheikh Mohammed Metwally Al Shaarawi

Shaykh Muhammad Metwally Al-Sha'rawi was born in 1329 AH in the village of Daqados, Mit Ghamr district, Daqahlia governorate, Egypt. He memorized the Holy Quran at the age of 11 in his village, and received his initial education at the Azhari Institute of Zagazig, where he completed his primary and secondary education before joining the Faculty of Arabic Language.

He obtained his scholarly license in 1941 and then received his doctorate and teaching license in 1942.

Although he was offered the position of Shaykh of Al-Azhar and other leadership positions in a number of Islamic countries, he refused and decided to devote himself to calling to Islam (dawah).

The people came to know Sheikh Al-Sha'rawi, and their connection with him was strengthened through the television program "Nur Ala Nur" in which he gave a commentary on the Noble Quran. The program started in the 1970s, and through it, Al-Sha'rawi's reputation spread throughout Egypt, the Arab world, and almost all Islamic broadcasting stations. In his commentary on the Quran, Al-Sha'rawi was a sign of Allah. His words were like flowing pearls. He (may Allah have mercy on him) was like a diver diving into the seas of meanings and thoughts, extracting pearls and jewels. When you listen to his expressions and follow his indications, his intelligent thoughts touch the depths of your heart, and his pure spirituality moves your soul.

Al-Sha'rawi lived with the Quran, teaching it to people, learning from it, and disciplining himself and others. He took on its character and etiquette. He lived, may Allah have mercy on him, a simple and humble life despite his fame and the adoration of kings, emirs, dignitaries, and the elite. He lived a simple life in the manner of peasant farmers. The Shaykh was familiar and beloved to people. Despite his awe-inspiring presence among scholars, people were fond of him and loved him for his pure soul, kindness, and sense of humor.

Al-Sha'rawi continued to give a commentary on the Quran until the end of his life, before being prevented by the illness he suffered from fifteen months before his death. On Wednesday, Safar 22, 1419 AH / June 17, 1998, his soul departed, at the age of 87 years, 2 months, and 16 days. He was buried in his village of Daqados. The nation lost another of its prominent scholars.
