Sheikh Muhammad Belkabir

Shaykh Mohammed Belkabir

The Shaykh and spiritual nurturer, Mohammed Belkabir, son of Abdullah son of Mohamed son of Abdulkarim, traces his lineage back to the great Companion, Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him). He was born in the Ghemarah Palace in Bouda, located 25 km west of the city of Adrar, in 1911 / 1330 AH. He studied in his hometown and memorized the Noble Quran, as well as texts on jurisprudence, grammar, and theology. He traveled to several countries to seek knowledge and teach.

In 1950, a group of notable figures in the city of Adrar decided to establish a Quranic school and a mosque. They could not find anyone better than Shaykh Belkabir to supervise them. To ensure that their request would not be rejected, they sought the help of Shaykh Ahmed Didi of Tamentit, asking him to mediate with his student, Mohamed Belkabir, to supervise the school and mosque. Shaykh Belkabir accepted the request of his teacher and opened his school and religious center that year. Shortly afterward, the center became a beacon of knowledge in the Tawat region, and in fact in Algeria, and the entire Islamic world. Students came from all over to study there.

Shaykh Mohamed Belkabir passed away at the age of 89, on the morning of Friday, 16th Jumada al-Thani in 1421 AH (December 3rd, 2000). On Saturday, a large crowd prayed upon him in the Great Mosque of his zawiyah in Adrar, which had never witnessed such a crowd before.
